Danielle van Assema, founder of Urn to Be, began creating unique, personalised urns 15 years ago after visiting a crematorium. Her inspiration came from the need to craft urns that reflect the diversity of each person’s life, as opposed to the sleek, smooth shapes she often observed.
Together with bereaved families, she diligently creates urns for deceased loved ones during 2 x 4-hour workshops, accessible without any experience with ceramics.
The “heart to heart” concept came about as she used leftover space in the raku kiln to fire hearts for bereaved loved ones. Some 30 funeral homes in the Netherlands are embracing this sustainable initiative, giving families a heart after the funeral for the difficult time that follows.
A pioneer in her profession, Danielle now faces new developments with the emergence of Alka Eco Liquification. With full dedication, she guides bereaved families through alternative forms of parting and remembrance. Urn to Be remains a source of support and creativity in an evolving landscape of funeral options.
